THE LADY IN RED CONVERSES WITH DIABLO

In October 2014, In the Basement Theater Co. unleashed their last project: "THE LADY IN RED CONVERSES WITH DIABLO", a surreal theatrical world of experiences sculpted and woven together by a collective of actors, dancers, film-makers, designers and musicians to create an immersive, intimate experience for an exclusive audience. Diablo opened his gates at sunset, and you were free to stay till sunrise, if you dared. Drawing inspiration from Borges’ short stories and the diablo folklore tradition of Mexico and the Caribbean, Diablo was a fable of convoluted identity, reversals and longings gone awry. The story found a singularly charismatic woman, The Lady in Red, falling in love with a reclusive fisherman, who she learned, through her search for identity and adoration, was actually the devil. The haunting and original soundtrack was scored and performed live by Rabbit in the Rye inside an abandoned hospital space in Brooklyn, NY.

...It's all convincingly mood-setting if not so overwhelming in thoughtful detail that you forget it's a set a la Punchdrunk... That mood is aided immeasurably by the talented band Rabbit in the Rye, who play their score almost continuously throughout the show. It's Americana punch is the glue that often elevates the material on hand...

'TABLED FABLES'

...The progressive folk-laden EP is an arcing narrative driven by Mettler's sagacious lyrics. A scarlet vixen hangs from the gallows for shooting her love. A fisherman grows old awaiting the warmth of the sun. A beekeeper laments the loss of a honeyed hive. The album's themes smack thick with rustic rhetoric, telling tales of love and loss. Each is ensconced in elegant tragedy. And while Mettler's lyrics swell with poetic beauty, it's the off-kilter rhythms and reaching harmonies that bring each song to life. The ambitious EP may ultimately prove the group's springboard to success...

..."Well here, in the hayfield with a blanket in tow. I tuck the fire in ‘til the breathing is slow," the band sings on "Oh Brother, I Love You." It’s a dreamy song that skips and floats like sparks against a velvety night sky. Songs can be that. The imprint of memories. Wooden canoes painted red and blue and set to drift on rivers named for long-vanished Indian tribes. Apple orchards and small vineyards tidy in squares of green and black earth, a patchwork quilt stitched by long roads where a car can drive for miles without passing another car. Maybe a tractor. Maybe an Amish wagon...

..."Rapturous Rays," with its bite and the kick of its drums, the one-two punch of vocals that beat at the loneliness of space and the frailty of dreams, captures so well the upstate N.Y. malaise. The prettiness of its gorges and pebble beaches; the bleakness of its small towns and quick-advancing winters. "I’d like to stay in the sun," the songs says. Beseeches. Twists in agony and energy into a psychedelic jam of sorts. Honey hives and blackberry brambles. The plenty of summer just a foil for the long cold season always encroaching...

...The band straddles the line between quintessential American folk and contemporary blues with a superb mix of proverbial lyrics, pounding bass lines and creative drum beats that will keep you tapping your feet. Switching between acoustic and electric sets, the band has a sound that feels original, yet familiar at the same time. It is hard to ignore the unique presence the band has on stage as they sway and dance to the energy of their own creation...
